    K2 curriculum

    Hello there,
can you tell me of your children's K2 curriculum and what kind of kindergarten it is?

We moved to HK in April and my son (4 years in October) goes to a local (Cantonese/English) whole-day kindergarten. They started writing already: ABC, numbers and some Chinese caracters which I don't really like. He would start doing that back home in Germany only in 3 years when he starts school (and we probabely will be back by that time). He starts to pick up English and some Cantonese now. At the moment he still enjoys to "write" but he just does it but usually doesn't know what he is doing, that a "3" is a "3". And his writing skills are not good (which I think normal at his age for a boy) and I was told by kindergarten to practise writing with him. We sent him on purpose to a local school to learn Cantonese and I looked at some different ones in the area (North District). I liked his kindergarten best, it's not as strict as other local ones and has some Montessori. His little sister will start nursery there in November when she is 2 (she can't wait) and I actually would like to have both children in the same school. My son likes his kindergarten very much and has a great teacher. That's for the background. What would you do? Leave him there? Look for a different kindergarten (but there is not much around here and I don't really want to have him ride the school bus for a long time)? Practise writing with him?
As you can see I am quite unsure about the situation... Can you give me some advice, please?

    Thanks for your help!

As far as I am aware, all of the local kindies have reading and writing from K1 onwards. If he's happy there, maybe you can leave him there but make clear to the teacher that she is not to pressure him about his reading and writing because you don't care. But will he lose interest and confidence if he cannot keep up with his peers?

My friends with little ones in local kindies even have daily homekwork and exams. The parents help them with their homework everyday. If you don't want that, maybe you could look into an intl kindie like at Hong Lok Yuen Intl School http://www.hlyis.edu.hk/?
