Need to find an English-speaking Intl school for a non-English-speaking kid!

    Hi All!

I'm hoping that I can draw on the wealth of experience on this site.

I'll shortly be marrying my filipina sweetheart. Can't wait, as well as gaining a lovely wife, I'll also have a lovely, young daughter as part of the deal!

Finding a school for 6-year old Kate here in HK is proving to be a bit of a headache however.

I need to find a good International school that will accomodate a young girl who's first language is not English (and not Cantonese). The problem is that most "good" schools seem to require a level of English as a pre-requisite. So, I find myself with somewhat of a vicious circle.

Of course, her mother and I will do our best to coach her language skills, but I really need the support of the school to ensure her integration. Unfortunately, judging by some of the admissions officers I've had contact with, many of the "good" schools don't seem to be places I want my daughter to by schooled!

As well as the usual waiting lists to contend with, and the standard wishes for a good education for my child, finding an agreeable school doesn't seem to be easy at all. It has to be an International school really too - English has to be my priority over Cantonese, given that I (we!) may head back to the UK at any time.

So, I need a sympathetic International school, of some standard, in or around the Happy Valley locality. Money is not so much of a concern (though I'm loathe to hand over big money to some of these schools!), just the well-being of my family.

Can anyone provide any advice, or words of wisdom???

    English school

    Hi,

I am the principal of a secondary school in HK. We are small, new and a Christian school. Just opened in Sept. of 2007. Next year there are plans in place to open a primary school as well although I have heard some discussion of opening in 09-10, so they can do more recruiting, but I'm not really involved in it's opening so don't know for sure. But I do know that it will be 70% English, 30% Mandarin. It will have all native English speakers, mostly Americans I believe, and will have plenty of space available when they open. I don't know if there is an English proficiency test required.

I think the tuition will be somewhere around 75,000'ish, but it is *not* an international school. It is a local private school, following HK curriculum, taught and administered by native English teachers.

If interested let me know and I can put you in touch with the principal of that section.

School's name is Hong Kong Adventist Academy.

    Best,
    Kris

Many thanks for your reply, Kris. Any news about whether the primary school will be opening this year or next? If there are openings for 2008, please do put me in touch with the principal. Much appreciated, Kris. Cheers!
