    Hong Lok Yuen International School

Hi, are there any moms who send the kids to Hong Lok Yuen IS? Any comment will be very much welcome! My child is 5 and is attending JIS in Tai Po and consider the move. How about English and math at HLYIS? Is Mandarin class offered daily and how is the level? Please let me know anything about the school. Thanks a million!

My daughter attends HLYIS and really loves it. I believe it's of a similar size to JIS. It's a small school with a strong teacher, parent community. My daughter absolutely loves it there and has so many friends of different nationalities.

My daughter is only in Y2 and the Maths I find is not overly difficult but right for her age group she is in and they have different reading groups depending on the level of each child.

Mandarin is taught daily for about 35 mins and again is separated into three different groups where the children are placed according to their abilities.

I think it is a lovely school where most of the children know each because of the small size and you are able to speak to the teachers on a daily basis as they are in the playground every morning.

Hope this helps, I'll be happy to answer any other questions you have.

My son is 2yrs8mths now, and I consider to send him to study at HLYIS! Is it a happy school? How about the standard of chinese language at HLYIS? As far as I know HLYIS has Pre Nursery class, I would like to know the Pre Nursery just only PM class? coz I worry about the kid can't get a nap! Would you share more information about HLYIS and please give some advice?

Sorry for asking so many questions!!

    Many many thanks!!!

It is a happy school as my daughter is very happy there and I see the smiling faces of the children when I do the school run. Also as mentioned before, the parents see the class teacher everyday before and after school in the playground, so if they have any issues with the school, they are able to speak to the teacher on a daily basis.

I believe the standard of chinese is pretty high but I cannot really compare to other international schools. However, one of the chinese parents at the school mentioned that the mandarin taught in the first term of P2 was the eqivalent of the second half of the year for a P1 student at a local chinese school.
But also remembering that HLYIS has three groups in mandarin and the majority of expats are placed in the 'easier' group so they can learn at a slower pace.

I believe pre nursery only do a pm class and I know many toddlers have their naps after the class at about 3pm.
If it's any consulation, I remember my daughter stopping having her naps by the time she was 3 years.
    I hope that helps!

If you want more detailed info, the school has a website:

    Thank you so much, Klam!

    Dear Klam,

Every bit of your information about the school is so helpful as I don't see many HLY moms around. Good thing that your child has a lot of fun to be there. That's what really counts. For Chinese, do you know if the top group learns Pin Yin in the class at lower grades like P1 or P2? How about reading and writing Chinese? Also, have you seen any streamed group in English and Math? The biggest concern of mine is if my child ever fits in to the grade according to her age, as she has been assessed as a gifted and her English and Math at the moment are way beyond the grade requirement of her age. That's partly the reason why I would like a smaller size school which I hope is more flexible and attentive to each child's needs. I'm so grateful if there's any input from you.

You are welcome, it's always good to do more research on a school you are interested in. One of the reasons I chose HLYIS because it was small and I liked the small community feel that surrounds the school.
In mandarin, the children learn Pin Yin from the start in all 3 groups. The top group (Dragon) have homework 4 times a week and it does involve a lot a writing, such as individual words as well as sentences. In P2 they have just had a small individual exam to test them on their written work as well as their reading and understanding of questions. I know the children that didn't do well in the exam, the parents were notified and there were discussions as to what options they had..eg extra tutorials or going into a lower madarin group etc. So your children doesn't just take an exam and then forgotten about, those who struggle will receive extra help.
The school does not have streaming for subjects such as Maths and English. The children however, are placed in different groups for reading according to their ability. This is great as my daughter's reading is quite advanced for her age group and when she was in P1, she was given P2 reading books to read so she was able to embrace her abilities.
I'm afraid I cannot comment on Maths for children who are more advanced as my daughter is only average in this subject but I am sure they will be given more advanced work than the rest of the class. However, I am sure the school will be able to tell you more about how they can help children who are more gifted as I know they have programs in place for children who have learning difficulties.
Let me know if youy wish to know more.
