    Island school

My daughter has been offered a place at the Island School. Any parents out there know about this school? Any comment is greatly appreciated.

How old is your daughter? The school is planning on being redeveloped in the next few years.

My daughter is 11. She will be in Y7 in September.

We went through the ESF central admission and was offered an interview after her exam. Only then did we realise the school will be demolished in two years time. We had one week to decide and pay the deposit to secure the offer. As we are not familiar with the HK school system, we had no choice but to accept the offer.

Our daughter is academic, sporty especially in swimming, plays piano and sings in Choir. She enjoys a stable environment and makes friends that last for years. If the Island School is a good school for her, then we'll try to stick with it.

I just had a look at the rental nearby, it's not encouraging.

If there are better suggessions on ESF Secondary schools, then we may look into moving her in a year or two.

We are still to find a primary school for our other daughter. It's a chicken and egg situation, where to find a school, where to find an accommodation.

So whether or not we'll stick with Island school seems to be our first step. Any comment on the school, academicly, Extra Curriculum acativities, school community etc, would be most appreciated!

If your daughter is academic she will do fine at Island School. It's a good school with numerous ECAs. However, kids who need extra help tend to fall through the cracks and do better in schools with smaller class sizes.

Everyone is nervous about the move and I know of a few families who are wait listed and transferring to other schools to avoid it.

    Hi,
I have a son in year7 and we live in West Kowloon.
You don't have to live near Island school. There are buses to IS from all over HK Island as well as from Meifoo, Olympic, Kowloon to IS. Even children from Discovery Bay, New Territories come to IS> There is a bus from GPO to take kids who come by train as well. In 2 years the school will hopefully move to somewhere near Shatin. Best to check with the school where you are allowed to stay, I dont think it's an issue in secondary. For primary they are very particular about catchment area. Try the schools which have more than 2 forms like QBS, Kennedy, KJS, BHS or clear water bay school.
    Good luck!

Thank you Mommyof2! Sorry for the late reply. My husband went to HK recently try to find out which area to live and his feedback is Discovery Bay as you get more living spaces for the same price people pay on the island. There's a ferry ride and a school bus connection. I am concerned it's going to be a long and tiring journey for the kids to go to school like this everyday. How many changes (bus/MTR) does your son take to get to school? How long is the journey? Where are students mostly live in Island School? Any information on these is much appreciated.

My other girl in Primary still hasn't got a school place, as we don't have a residential address yet. Stress! Once we've found a place to live and with that address hopefully she'll be on the track in finding a school.

The majority of Island School students tend to live a 10-15 minutes drive from school. However there are students who commute from further away and if you look at the school bus service you can see they have students coming in from all across Hong Kong.
