ESF Tsing Yi Terrible

My friend with twin girls attended the summer playgroup and she too said the lack of discipline at Tsing Yi ESF kindie surprised her (since it's playgroup she was there and was able to observe everything). If you want to know the details I can ask my friend again about it, as I don't want to quote incorrectly with my goldfish memory

We both have our kids currently attending Discovery Montessori for the second year now, so we're on the same page on what we want from a Kindie. However, we do worry about primary school admission (don't we all!) so I am planning to apply for ESF Tsing Yi this October.

However, I am quite worried about what he'd learn (...and not learn) in Kindie, as I am a strong believer in the lifetime affect kindies have on us, plus the importance of integrity between school & home educations. In the end, the question would be, is it worth it to keep a child in a preschool I do not quite believe in, for the sake of a higher chance in getting into a ESF primary school? I honestly do not have a definite answer to this, and would love to hear fellow (veteran) moms share about it.

Lily, do let us know how the school responds to you. Bullies are everywhere, but how the teaching staff respond to it does help shape the characters of our children.

Bullying really starts in the home. If we want to change bullying we have to change as a whole society. It is a really tough situation. I really like ESF to implement Social Thinking classes in Kindie level and continuing on to Primary. So far I only heard about ESF Beacon Hill implementing Social Thinking.

Couple of my friends are going to ESF, they are relatively happy with Tsing Yi.. Talk to teacher and see how does this go.

I notice similar situation on the orientation day, a girl tried to grab a toy from my daughter in a very aggressive way, I asked my daughter to share with her, which my daughter actually gave it to her, she would not give up grabbing another toy from my daughter's hand, and I had to stop her after she tried a few times. I also have same concerns that kids being ignored because teachers or TAs are too busy. My daughter had a few situations to do with personal hygiene which really concerned me. Maybe the teacher student ratio is a bit high.

My son is in the PM K1 class at Tsing yi, I am very impressed with his teacher, she is very quick to respond back via email should I have questions. Her weekly reports are fantastic and very nice to receive and my son loves going there. I am sorry your son is being bullied and as I am an early years educator (not at Tsing Yi) they may be aware of this girls behavior and already trying to help her with her aggression. Please talk to your son's teacher and open the communication so you as a parent can feel confident they are doing what's best for your son. I don't know if Tsing Yi has a thinking chair like other kindergartens maybe they do and maybe this young lady spends time in it often. Teachers nor TA's can catch everything but they can look out for your concerns and be more aware of how this girl is around your child you just need to open the communication. BEST WISHES.

Does ESF Tsing Yi offer a parent volunteer rota? My son goes to ESF kindie as well (but Hillside, on HK island) and there's a volunteer program there that allows me to go in on a weekly or biweekly basis to participate during open play (and mystery reading in the second half of the classroom activities.) I find that's a great opportunity to see how the teachers and EAs work with our children, and also allows us to get to know the other students better. (Because the open play segment mixes kids from all 4 classes, you can interact with the teachers and students from the other classes too, not just your child's class). Also by staying on in the second half of the classroom segment, I get to see how the kids in my son's class act, and how the teacher responds to "red choices" they make.

For full time working moms who can't volunteer, perhaps you know or could befriend moms of your child's friends who do volunteer, and they could keep tabs for you on your child and goings on in the class. I have a few moms who asked me to keep an eye out for their kids when I volunteer, and I also try to SMS/Whatsapp them pics of their child from time to time when I'm there volunteering.

    Hello lily1221,

Hi, how are you? I read your post abt the ESF Tsing Yi issues. We just moved to HK and have been searching around all over the place for a place in a kindie for our kid who's already 3. We have secured a place n Sunshine, DMK (both in Tung Chung), and also now in ESF Tsing Yi. We have to sign the ESF contract in a day and when I read your post I was doubting our decision abt ESF tsing Yi.
Have the issues been clarified? Do you feel comfortable about your child's experience now, or you still think the staff should be handling things better?

It would be immensely helpful to get this feedback, as we have to sign up tomorrow last day of offer.

    Much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi katzmum, my son went to the play visit last Wednesday and it went well. ESF Tsing Yi is also one of our likely choice, but like Lovely Dreams I have my concerns about the 'discipline' issue there (without a better word for it). Again, this is not the first time i heard about kids hitting others at ESF TY and i am gravely distressed although I'd love to have my son there. If it is alright, can you share your thoughts here or PM me as well? thanks!
