There were quite a few members who were in the same position last year, and also signed up for P1 classes at Woodlands and (i think) PIPs and were put on the wait list at an ESF school.

Have you looked at other schools, HK Academy / Harbour School / Victoria Shanghai Academy?

Have you applied for any other schools? ESF has been hugely oversubscribed for the past 2 years. I know children who were waitlisted for Y1 and the school has told them it's very unlikely to get a spot for Y2 entry. There are just too many on the waiting list. Glenealy is only 2 form so 60 children in Y1 (correct?), so even if 10 kids leave during a year, it may not be sufficient. P1 programs are definitely an option but the school won't guarantee you a Y2 spot so you need a longer term back up plan in my opinion. Find out where you are on the waiting list ... that may be give you a better idea of your chances.

Please check out HK Academy ( HKA is moving to Sai Kung 2013 so also keep that in mind). I went to their open house today. I really like the school. The overalll thought to their program. And they are a non profit school so that means you have a say in what is going on in the school curriculum. The family debenture is HKD 400,000. I have two kids 4 and 6 ... no hope for ESF learning support ... sigh.

Not very far down. With 120 places, they usually invite 20% more first round (this 20% will get a non-guaranteed interview, a few friends had that, and all got spots in Feb/March). Some get reclined, some move elsewhere, then maybe another 10-15 kids tops in a 2nd round. Also kids can move down the waiting list. Once a child with a sibling gets a spot in a certain year, the other sibling gets priority and can overtake another child. Same for inter-ESF transfers, kids of teachers, etc. So even if you're number 10 or 15, it doesn't mean a lot. If I transfer my kids to e.g. Glenealy, they'll get priority and push down some other kids. In general over a full school year, including summer, I don't think you can't expect more than 10-20 kids to leave (and that's for a 4-form school, 120 kids in a year). Some people on the list might have found a spot elsewhere, others may be waiting at their 2nd choice and move immediately once given an interview. Do you know where you are on the list? I've had several (non-Asian, native speakers) friends who were way down (around place 100) and it's highly unlikely they'll get a spot anytime soon. I have another friend who's in the top 30 and even then they told her it's unlikely to get spot within a year.
